The VELscopeŽ System is a hand-held device for dentists, hygienists, and other oral health care professionals, to examine adjunctive mucosal tissue for early detection of oral cancer. Oral cancer can be a risk for all different types of persons, not just those who smoke and drink. Recently, research has shown the HPV virus can also lead to oral cancer . The VELscopeŽ System is a patented technology platform. It was developed by the British Columbia Cancer Agency in collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center. Funding was provided in part by the NIH. This device is based on the direct visualization of tissue fluorescence and the changes that occur if these abnormalities are present.

The VELscopeŽ System Handpiece will emit a safe blue light
into the oral cavity, which excites the tissue from the surface of the epithelium through to the basement membrane and into the stroma beneath, causing it to
fluoresce. Your Webster Dental clinician is then able to immediately view the different fluorescence responses to help differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue. In fact,
the VELscopeŽ System is the only device cleared by the FDA to assist in discovering oral mucosal lesions that might not be apparent or visible
to the naked eye and to help surgeons determine the appropriate surgical margin for tumor excision.
